Metatron, Master of the Deathwing (Belial)
What better place to start on 103 models than at the top? Since there is no model for Metatron (Belial) I need to convert one. Like many others, I chose to base mine on the Chaos Terminator Lord model. It has a fairly dynamic pose (for a Terminator suit) and best of all: twin Lightning Claws. I started out by filing all of the Chaos symbols off of the armor and getting a basic pose down. I had intended to use a bare head, but then I tried one of the Mk. 2 “Crusader” heads and I liked it so the switch was made mid-stream. Since the entire chapter is based on the look & “feel” of the Punisher, posing Metatron on a scenic base (by Dragon Forge of course) was a natural choice. It elevates him, gives him more of a “stalking” pose, and defines him as a big bad character. It raises his profile for line-of-sight in games, but who cares about things like that?
I got ahead of myself and started building shoulder pads and sculpting away before snapping pics. These things happen. The shoulders are of course Dreadnought shin guards. (The Dark Angel versions, the one with the sword logo was filed down as the symbol was upside-down.) Some quick side guards out of sheet styrene to add to the “pre-Heresy” feel and they were done. The skull on the right leg and the scroll on the left were not bad attempts. I may scrape them and try again, but I’m leaving them for now. The loin cloth was sculpted out of spare putty back during the Obliterator project along with a handful of others. A good use for excess putty that you don’t want to waste.
And a size comparison to a stock AoBR Terminator.
Now that Brother Metatron is standing I went to work on the rest of the pose. The arms took some agonizing over to convey the look I was after. It’s always amazing how just reposing the arms can change the feel of a mini. I scraped the bottom trim on the left leg as it turned out too thick for what I wanted. I added the helmet wings (use of which seems mandatory in a Dark Angels army somewhere) but didn’t like them on the helmet itself. I played around with locations and finally settled on the back. I’m toying with adding a cloak to further enhance the “pre-Heresy knight” feel, but it’s still drying. A bit of sculpting to take care of the feet attachments to the base and some other minor frills and Brother Metatron is nearly ready for the brush. Lots of detailing to go, but the broad strokes are there.
To cloak, or not to cloak? That is the burning question on this model.
