Project: Obliterator Cult – Completed

Sculpting At Last

Boy, did that take longer than expected. I’m way behind schedule on this project and need to work double-time to pull it off. I’m going to show stage by stage progression work on the first sculpt and then just progress shots on the rest. (I can work much faster if I’m not stopping to take shots every so often.)

Like usual, I start at the bottom with the feet. Time for the big old stompy boots. To get things started, I put a ring of putty around the outside for the soles. This must set up before I do anything else to the boot, so I went ahead and did all 6 at the same time to keep some forward progress.

Once that is set up and firm, I add on the big toe cap to make them look like steel-toed boots. A few dings and dents to simulate damage and he’s good to go. It looks a bit Orky I know, but then again I do have an Ork army. It also looks way out of proportion at the moment. That will change, trust me.

With the boots set I work my way up the legs. The hose and leg attachments need cleaning up and the big issue is the waist join. For Stickman here, I’ve decided to go with a classic Nurgle feature: the bloated belly. I’ve added a layer of putty over the plastic details to prep for the addition.

To bulk out the belly without a pile of putty I added an angled slice of the same tubing I used for the arms and sculpted over it. (No picture.) The rest of the waist/hip area is added in back. I decided in the interest of speed to just go with the “weird fleshy growth” motif that the official models have. It’s easy to sculpt and looks pretty good when painted.

For the next stage I went for the face. I want the suit to look like it’s growing onto/into him. I packed putty in behind the head to fill the gap and worked on the attachment for the hose.

At the same time I started bulking up the stacks on the back.

And last, but not least, the arm attachments. I extended this look to the chest to blend in the hoses that I added.

A few details like the tops of the stacks and other bits and the body is “done.” I still want to detail the boot sole edges and other bits, but I’ll wait to see how much time I have at the end.

One body down, five more to go. And then the arms. Am I ever going to finish this project???
