My How Time Flies

Today marked 2 years to the day since I was released from the hospital after my near-death experience. A triumphant day to be remembered. However, it also marks the day that our beloved cat Grizzly Bear finally gave up the ghost. We rescued him from an animal shelter in the winter of ’96 as a kitten. He fathered a litter of 5 before he was a year old. (Our fault.) He’s been loving and as loyal as a cat can be. He’s been sliding downhill for the past six months, literally wasting away before our eyes. It’s been sad to watch nature take it’s course. To have him die today is just… sad.

Farewell Grizzly. May you have that shady grassy spot you loved so much up in heaven.

Super Secret Project

I hinted back in December that a new major project was in the works. That’s finally gaining traction and momentum. I can’t spill the details just yet, but I will post a teaser photo of one of the projects involved…

We (yes, we) hope to unveil what we’re working on by this holiday season. We *might* have some teaser samples floating around at GenCon Indy. Stay tuned!

Some Days I Wonder…

What the heck was I thinking??? 13 credits in the summer? Short semester? MATH 1010?

Apparently I’m a glutton for extreme punishment. On the plus side though, If I can pull this all off this semester the regular fall semester should feel like a breeze in comparison.

I actually took a couple of hours for myself and started building a Tactical unit for my Punishing Angels. Sort of a proof of concept. They’ve come out really well. Not quite what I had in my head, but fairly close. Some times all of the visualization and mock-ups in the world just can’t convey what the real thing will look like. Sadly, I’m also about 90% certain at this point that I’ll be using Codex: Space Marines to build the army rather than Codex: Dark Angels. More options, and more competitive. (If I ever get time to play again.) If and when GW ever gets around to revising the Dark Angels codex it should be more in line with the current SM codex so in a way I’m planning for the future. I guess. GW. Who really knows?

Memorial Day

I salute those who now wear or have worn the uniform of our armed forces with pride. (Which includes myself.) I would go decorate graves of my family tomorrow, but I have hours of homework still to do. So much for a “holiday” weekend.

School Daze

Attended my first college class in 14 years last night. (Has it been that long? Yikes!) 2.5 hours of Intermediate Algebra. Over 50 problems on the homework. Class again tomorrow night.

Needless to say my brain is feeling a bit sad. I have a 3 hour class on English & Creative Writing tonight. That will hurt, but in a different region of the brain. What was I thinking?

40K Noob

So I played my very first game of 40K last night. I wanted to start off right and learn the game from someone who knows it inside and out. Since Andrew “Stelek” Sutton of yesthetruthhurts.com is a local I asked him to teach me the game. He graciously agreed and even hosted the game at his house. Obviously the first game was a “let the wookie win” scenario, but it was a great learning experience. Andy is a very sharp gamer with a keen sense of tactics and is one of those guys that can think 4~5 moves ahead. I’m looking forward to learning more from him as time in my life schedule permits.

I even earned a post on his blog: Necrons vs. Black Templars

There’s talk of maybe turning my learning process into an ongoing series of write-ups. Would any of my readers be interested in something like this? I’ve always stayed away from the gaming aspect of the hobby here on my site as I figure there’s tons of other resources out there for it. It would be good to get some feedback on this one.

Back to School

It’s official, I’m going back to school. I’m registered for Summer 2010 semester at my local USU extension. I’m a bit frustrated that of the 90 credits I had earned on my ATA degree, only 5 transferred over to the new program. 79 something came in as “electives”, which does nothing for my current graduation requirements. In essence, I’m a Junior starting all over from scratch as a Freshman. *sigh*

Courses I’m taking:

13 credits total. Nothing like starting off at a dead sprint, eh? Best of all, I apparently make too much money (even with my daughter going to college at the same time) for any financial aid other than student loans. Not unexpected, but still disappointing. If only I had elected the G.I. Bill back when I was in the Navy. Then again, my family would have starved so I made the right choice.

Sailing the Uncharted Seas

Spent some time Saturday night playing Uncharted Seas with my buddy Tony for the first time. Although the rulebook is written pretty poorly, the system works well and we had fun with it. Enough fun to come back for more. Just what I need, another game to compete for my limited hobby time! Expect to see at the very least some gallery photos of my fleets when I get them painted. Whenever that may be…

It’s been a month since I took any pics of stuff I’m working on. Camera is still on death’s door with no possible relief in site. Oh, well. Trudging on…

All of these pieces are commissions for the same client. I’ve still got a sizable backlog to work through before my debt is paid in full.

Captain Maxwell Finn

I now have been forcibly reminded why I hated this mini so much. The 3 point connection of arms and gun is just horrid to get lined up properly. That and the stupidity of designing the belt feed to come in from the right, so that the empty casings eject on the left, directly into the firer just boggles my brain. I had to switch that of course.

Master Holt

Nothing special here.

General Gerlak Slaughterborn

Could be a cool mini. It’s much too tough for a casual conversion though. It would take a serious amount of cutting/resculpting to do anything other than the stock pose.

Trencher Chain Gun

Another Cygnar model that I loathe. The way it is cut (and sculpted) just makes zero sense. The gunner & gun are left separate for painting, otherwise it’s impossible. (I should know, I tried it for the one I painted for No Quarter.)

Pistol Wraith

The alternate sculpt Pistol Wraith. The addition of the hat was my client’s idea. Adjusting the pistol arm was mine. He wanted to keep the flowing hair so I did my best.

Iron Lich Asphyxious

Probably the piece I’m happiest with. It started life as 2 pieces picked up in a trade. Both the Lich and the Skarlock had been shabbily painted. After some heavy stripping I decided to try and splice the two together. After some work I got bored and let if sit for years. After a some time in the Bazaar, my client picked it up from me and commissioned me to finish it. Since it had no weapon yet he asked for a scythe rather than the usual weapon. A bit of bits bashing later and he’s got a pretty fierce looking weapon.

Lich Lord Asphyxious

Also a Bazaar offering with the same result. Commissioned to finish. I added a censer from my Dark Angels and topped it with the “soul” bit from this same client’s Deathjack. Nothing like a bit of bits recycling. The best part? With the new conversion policy for Privateer events this piece is actually legal.

More to come sooner rather than later I hope.
